Being overweight is a big plague in the western world and it becomes more of a problem in the other parts of the world. As the volume of the local economy and personal incomes increase, people start to eat differently. More sugar, more refined carbohydrates and generally more calories. On the other side of the balance, an other trend adds to the negative spiral: People don't move that much anymore and have a more comfortable, often even sedate life.

Too much calories from highly refined foods and too little excercise - THE formula to put on weight. Once people start to get heavier, stey start an extrmely vicious circle: The too much of sugars drives the insulin pump. Insulin stops or at least greatly reduces the fat burning mechanism and it makes for food cravings. Thus people feel compelled to eat more snacks and other not very healthy foods whilst the body keeps on storing the excess energy input in form of fat. And this new fat accumulates, because we don't burn it enymore.

As this is often a slow process we don't notice it at first. Adding half a kilo every week does not seem to be much, but at the end of the year you add about 25 kilos to your weight, and even if you only add 100 grams every week, it's still 5 kilos a year, and in fve years you added 25 kilos too - unless you start changing your habits.
